Colorado native Annamarie Zmolek is a young soprano on the rise. She recently sang on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera as a Semi-finalist in the National Council Auditions, having won first place in the Southwest region for 2012. One week prior to that competition, she was praised by the Colorado Springs Gazette for her "unforgettable portrayal of Violetta" in La Traviata with Opera Theatre of the Rockies. Her other appearances this spring have included a gala concert in Miami with the Grammy Award nominated choral group Seraphic Fire and a performance of the soprano solo from the Brahms Requiem with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. Most recently she appeared in concert performances of Mimi in La Bohème with Green Mountain Opera Festival and Venus in Zachary Wadsworth’s chamber opera Venus and Adonis with Lone Star College. Her upcoming performances in Colorado include Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus with Opera Theatre of the Rockies, an appearance at the Christmas Joy Concert for First Presbyterian Church, and concerts all over Colorado in November for Central City Opera’s Opera Rocks the Rockies tour. This spring she will cover the roles of Desdemona (Otello) and Countess (Le nozze di Figaro) with Wichita Grand Opera.

She spent two summers as an Apprentice Artist with Central City Opera, where she sang the student performances of the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor and Micaëla in Carmen. She also sang Mrs. Anderssen in the mainstage production of A Little Night Music, where her performance was praised by Opera News for “projecting the requisite sophistication (and tricky words).” Under the direction of John Moriarty in his final season with the company, she sang the role of Clara in Signor Deluso. She has presented two recitals in Central City and received the Apprentice Award.

Ms. Zmolek has performed frequently with Opera Theatre of the Rockies, including the roles of Frasquita in Carmen and Countess in Le nozze di Figaro. In addition to operatic credits, her oratorio performances include the soprano solos in Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Schubert’s Mass in G, Handel’s Messiah and Fauré’s Requiem. She has placed first in the 2012 Ruth Burr Vocal Competition, first in the Denver Lyric Opera Guild Competition, second in the 2011 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in the Southwest Region, third in the San Antonio Opera Competition, and fourth in the San Antonio Tuesday Music Club Competition.

While completing her Master’s Degree at Rice University, she performed the roles of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni and Prima Donna in Donizetti’s Viva la Mamma. She completed her undergraduate studies at the Eastman School of Music under the tutelage of Robert Swensen. She earned her Bachelor’s of Music and was also awarded the Performer’s Certificate in Voice. She sang the roles of Nightingale (Nightingale), Beggar Woman (Sweeney Todd), Mrs. Gleaton (Susannah) and understudied the role of Lisette (La Rondine). As the only undergraduate student competing in the 2004 Friends of Eastman Opera Competition, she placed third. While at Eastman she won the concerto competition and performed Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with the Eastman Philharmonia. A few months later she reprised the piece with the New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra as the winner of their Young Artist Competition.

An avid performer of new music, she has collaborated often with composer Zachary Wadsworth, premiering three of his song cycles in recital and debuting the role of Venus in his chamber opera Venus and Adonis. She has sung the award-winning Wadsworth song cycle, Pictures of the Floating World, on several recitals with the composer at the piano. Ms. Zmolek currently lives in Houston, where she is on faculty at Prairie View A & M University.
