Soprano Solveig Olsen is thrilled to be spending the summer with Opera Theatre of the Rockies Vocal Arts Festival. She will be a featured singer in "Opera Guffo," a night of opera at its most hilarious, and will be singing the role of Anna in their production of "The King and I." Miss Olsen has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Guild, Chicago Opera Theater, the Ravinia and Caramoor Festivals, the Indianapolis, Transylvania, and Santa Fe Symphonies, and Chicago's New Millenneum Orchestra, as well as many others, including the national tour of StarWars: In Concert, hosted by actor Anthony Daniels. This season included a concert of original arias with award winning composer Anthony Davis (X, The Life and Times of Malcolm X, Amistad), Pierrot Lunaire with Ensemble Peak FreQuency, the role of Ellen in the Opera Theatre of the Rockies production of Lakme, as well as a pre-concert lecture for the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs. She recently premiered works with composers Pamela Madsen (WUPATKI: House of the Enemies), and Phillip Blackburn (The Sun Palace), and portrayed the roles of Laetitia (The Old Maid and the Thief), and Sister Margaretta (The Sound of Music), both with Opera Theatre of the Rockies. She sang the role of Jennie Parsons in Kurt Weill’s Down in the Valley, with the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, and Villa Lobos’ Bacchianas Brasileiras No. 5 at Colorado College. Previous roles include Musetta, Pamina, Juliette, Mimi, Gretel, Mistress Ford, Frasquita, Lucia (The Rape of Lucretia), and Cunegonde. She has worked with illustrious conductors Raymond Leppard, Jane Glover, David Effron, Will Crutchfield, James Allbritten, Steven Crawford, Christopher Zemliauskas, and Francesco Milioto, and directors Diane Paulus, Christopher Cowell, Lara Teeter, and Steven LaCosse. A recent career grant winner of the Pikes Peak Opera League and the Anna Sosenko Foundation, Miss Olsen has also received awards from the Bel Canto Scholarship Foundation, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and the MacAllister Awards. Miss Olsen’s studies include degrees from Indiana University and the University of Iowa, with additional studies at the Aspen Music Festival, Centro Studi Italiani, and the Brevard Music Festival. Miss Olsen currently acts as Head of Voice at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
