Date End: 2011-06-12\n\nThe Manitou Art Theatre presents a new play &ldquo
\;Chewed Bread&rdquo\; written and performed by Nisa Ari and Paz Pardo\, d
irected by Birgitta De Pree and Jim Jackson. \nDoes reality create our b
eliefs or do our beliefs create our reality? Looking beyond scientific und
erstanding of the placebo effect\, the play Chewed Bread imagines a world
in which our reactions to life spring from a belief (or lack thereof) in p
lacebos. Loosey and Box are sisters\, daughters of a Turkish immigrant who
fed them a worldview of equal parts old world mysticism and modern empiri
cism (alongside their breakfasts of apple-feta sandwiches.) In the afterma
th of their father's death\, the sisters try to sort out their differences
and what they mean about the man who shaped them. Told through a fragment
ed account of science\, belief\, and sibling rivalry\, the play invokes th
e tricks of the brain as the two sisters try to piece together an adult re
lationship. Through song\, dance\, and excel spreadsheets\, Chewed Bread e
xplores that niggling suspicion that each of us is really the family misfi
t.\n\nPerformer/Creators Nisa Ari and Paz Pardo began working together whi
le at Stanford University in 2004. They grew up in eerily similar bi-cultu
ral households\, with one sister apiece\, which has more than likely contr
ibuted to their mutual fondness for identity crises and men with accents.
 Trained in classical theater\, Shakespeare\, musical theater\, clowning\,
and improvisation\, they are committed to physicalized activations of poet
ic language and cultural memory. Both currently live in New York City\, wh
ere this piece was created. Ari is the Associate Director of the Studio Pr
ogram at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts as well as a frequent music
al theater\, jazz\, and theater performer both in NYC and Colorado. Pardo
is the Resident Dramaturg with the TEAM (Theatre of the Emerging American
Moment) in NYC\, and has performed in New York\, London\, and San Francisc
