DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Event Name: Amahl and the Night Visitors=0D=0AEvent Url: http://www.peakradar.com/event/detail/40067=0D=0AEvent Date Begin: 2009-12-19=0D=0AEvent Date End: 2009-12-19=0D=0A=0D=0AThis timeless holiday treasure creates an accessible introduction to opera. The performance is sung in English. Cast of this annual community tradition includes upwards of 75 young people from area school districts who study music and theater at the Colorado Springs Conservatory (CSC) after their regular school hours. They're joined by dancers from the Ormao Dance Company and CSC alumni join the cast and instrumental ensemble for this year¹s production. This is the eighth annual presentation of this opera by the Conservatory.=0D=0A=Amahl, a young, impoverished, crippled shepherd boy, tries to tell his mother about what he has seen outside-- an enormous star with a long tail. His mother, used to his habitual lying, grows angry; she is even angrier when Amahl tells her that a knock at the door is three kings come to visit them. The kings enter and tell the two peasants that they are traveling to find a child, and they show Amahl and his mother the rich gifts they have brought him. They ask if they may stay and rest a while. While Amahl's mother is out gathering the village children and neighbors, Amahl asks the kings questions about their lives and the gifts they will offer, all the time wondering what he, the poor shepherd boy could offer such a child. The mother returns with the village children and parents who present their humble gifts to the kings. That night Amahl's mother tries to steal some of the king's gold to help her own Amahl; she is caught, and when the kings=0D=0A=offer to let her keep the gold, explaining that the king they seek will need nothing but love to rule his kingdom, she returns it. Amahl, watching the ordeal, realizes that he has one possession to give to this child they are preparing to see, and humbly offers his crutch. As he steps forward to give the kings his staff, he suddenly finds he can walk. They all deem this a sign from the 'Child.' Amahl leaves with the kings to pay homage to the child who has healed him.=0D=0A= =0D=0A=0D=0AStart time:12 & 2 pm
