Add Review/CommentAkira kicks off Anime Nation, presented by the Gallery of Contemporary Art and the UCCS Film Studies program. Based on the 2,182 page manga by Katsuhiro Otomo, Akira (1988) is a landmark film that blazed a trail into Western culture for modern anime. Set in 2019 in Neo-Tokyo, Akira follows a group of teenage bikers as they clash with rival gangs and eventually the military when Tetsuo, the runt of the motorcycle gang, collides with a psychically-charged child. Tetuso is whisked away by the military where he is subjected to scientific testing to release his innate psychic abilities. Tetsuo's psychic and physical powers eventually spiral out of control and it is up to Kaneda, the leader of the biker gang, to reel-in Tetsuo before Tokyo is destroyed once more. Akira will be broken up into two parts. Part one will screen on Thursday, September 20th. Part two will screen on Thursday, September 27th. "Easily the most breathtaking and kinetic anime ever made." - Michael Atkinson, Village Voice "The most expensive animated feature ever made in Japan and it's easily the most impressive, as well." - Richard Harrington, Washington Post Information * Total Runtime: 124 min (we will spread this over two evenings) * Language: English dubbing * Color: Color * Rating: R (graphic violence, brief nudity, and Cam Clarke performing Kaneda's English voice)
