Season Premiere: Chamber Orchestra of the Springs
October 6-October 7, 2007
Add Review/CommentThe Chamber Orchestra's season begins with a concert that spans three centuries of classical masterpieces. Come hear works by Mozart, Shostakovich and Bizet on Saturday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. at Broadmoor Community Church, and Sunday, October 7, at 3:00 p.m. at First Christian Church Mozart's brief, but powerful Symphony No. 32 in G Major, K318 was composed after a break of four years from symphonic writing, and looks both backward to the old Italian symphonic overture structure, and forward to the innovative orchestrations that would later define much of Beethoven's work. Shostakovich was tormented for most of his career by Stalin, but Stalin's death in 1953 ushered in a burst of creativity for the composer. He sought to move in new directions but also found, in his new comfort and safety, an opportunity to write soulful music that proved very popular with audiences. His Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Major, op. 102 is dedicated to his son, Maxim. Pianist Susan Grace solos with the Chamber Orchestra for these performances. Best known for his opera Carmen, George Bizet's Symphony in C Major is his finest orchestral work. Composed in 1855, when Bizet was only seventeen years old, it's believed that the symphony was never performed in his lifetime and had fallen entirely out of sight. In 1933 it was discovered in the archives of the Paris Conservatoire by one of Bizet’s biographers, and was first performed in 1935. Season or individual concert tickets for Chamber Orchestra of the Springs' concerts are available by calling (719)633-3649.
