“A lust for life” characterizes the work of Mary Chenoweth (1918-1999). A prolific artist working in a remarkably contemporary style for her time, Chenoweth served as Professor of Art at Colorado College for thirty-plus years. This exhibit, curated by Daisy McConnell, of Chenoweth’s work will survey both the incredible breadth of media the artist employed during her career, and explore recurrent themes within her work. A hardworking and self-effacing artist, Chenoweth quietly built an enduring legacy that remains visible at Colorado College and within the Colorado Springs community. She is remarkable for her work ethic—she created art almost every day for 80 years—and her successful career as an exhibiting artist and Professor of Art during a time when very few women artists broke through the art world’s gender barriers. Chenoweth’s work employed many media, from traditional Printmaking to sculpture; from collage to pen and ink drawing; from painting to artist books. Her artwork is characterized by vibrant colors, lively abstract and stylized shapes, and keen observations from the world around her. Chenoweth traveled extensively, and evidence of her travels is apparent in her paintings, artist books, and sketch books, many of which will be on display in Coburn Gallery during this exhibit. The ports of Australia, North Africa, and the Orient, among other locales, were highly influential on her choice of colors, collage, and forms. The exhibit will feature artwork from the Colorado College Art collection, the recently acquired Mary A. Chenoweth Collection in Tutt Library’s Special Collections, and Colorado Springs area collectors and friends of the artist. A highlight of the exhibition will be a hand-carved door recently donated by the estate of Peggy Marshall, a long-time patron and friend of the artist. Sponsored by the Colorado College Summer Festival of the Arts.
