LOCATION: Meet in the parking lot of Congregational Church, 103 Pawnee Avenue in Manitou Springs. TOUR GUIDES: Rev. David Hunting, Deborah Harrison TOUR COORDINATOR: Cathy Mundy THE TOUR: Built in 1880, the Community Congregational Church is the oldest church in Manitou. The first stage, now the Nave, was erected at a cost of $3400 by Angus Gillis and George Snider. The stone was quarried from Williams Canon behind the Cave of the Winds. On the National Register of Historic Places, it continues to reflect a classic and quaint style of sacred architecture. Its rare Anderson Pipe Organ is one of only four left in the country. We will also visit Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the quaint shingle-style Catholic Church, which was first erected on Ruxton Avenue in 1889 by the Gillis Brothers. The building was badly burned in 1903 but rose again to its former appearance within just three months, thanks to generous donors such as General Palmer, and continues to serve the citizens of Manitou well. Colorado Gray Lines Tours is generously furnishing shuttle busses at no cost for this Tour.
