The BAC kicks off not only the New Year but also the beginning of its 20th year with an exhibition that asks us to reflect on our past, consider the future, and appreciate our present. Album Amicorum: Gems of Friendship in a Frightened World is an exhibition of marbled & decorated paper inspired by the predecessor of the modern autograph book. The album amicorum, Latin for “friendship book,” is an artifact dating to the sixteenth century, and to scholars who collected papers, writings and illustrations from colleagues encountered in their travels. In this timely recontextualization of the friendship book, Guest Curator, master papermaker and marbler, Tom Leech, presents a very special and unusual exhibit of marbled & decorated papers from twenty-one artists living in Europe, Asia, Australia, and South and North America. Beginning with a single invitation from Tom Leech to a fellow artist in Turkey, the invitation passed between artists, each artist inviting another from across an international border. As Leech’s invitation stated, "While it is obvious that this will not change any country’s policies, we can demonstrate that friendship and the beauty of our craft can speak louder than fear." The Album Amicorum exhibit debuts at the Business of Art Center and will be offered to select venues around the world. It is already looking to travel to: New Mexico; Madrid, Spain; & Mainz, Germany. Artists (In order of the traveling invitation): Tom Leech (USA), Hikmet Barutcugil (Turkey), Tini Miura (Germany), Einen Miura (Japan), Susanne Krause (Germany), Renato Crepaldi (Brazil), Milena Hughes (USA), Karli Frigge (Netherlands), Brigitte Charbome (Belgium), Katalin Perry (France), Marianne Moll (Switzerland), Sabine Rasper (Germany), Joan Ajala (Australia), Victoria Hall (England), Nuri Pinar (Turkey), Montse Buxo (Spain), Alberto Valese (Italy), Nedim Sonmez (Turkey), Robert Wu (Canada), Iris Nevins (USA), Lucie LaPierre, Quebec/Canada. Guest Curator: Tom Leech: master papermaker, marbler, and director of The Press at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Leech, a studio artist at the BAC from 1992 - 98, also initiated a very successful exhibit on Tibetan papermaking, which opened at the Business of Art Center and subsequently traveled to the Smithsonian Institution, the art galleries of Indiana University and the University of California at Berkeley, and the American Museum of Papermaking in Atlanta, Georgia. This exhibition is sponsored in part by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.
