Constructed over a popular mineral spring in 1920 the Manitou Springs Spa Building has a notorious past. It also has a bright future. In this free program Deborah Harrison, President and founding member of Historic Manitou Springs Inc., provides a photographic essay with commentary about the fascinating history behind this legendary building and the Manitou Soda Spring enclosed within it. The Soda Spring was the central gathering place for all of the local residents and health seekers during Manitou Springs' Victorian resort era. The Spa Building is now undergoing restoration and will house shops as well as residential spaces. Harrison will discuss the urban legends that cling to the structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as its checkered past. Ms. Harrison is also the author of two other books related to Manitou Springs history, The Cliff House-Pikes Peak Hospitality and a pictorial history Images of America: Manitou Springs. The Spa Building and the Cliff House are closely related to Manitou Springs' international fame as a health resort. Ms. Harrison will conduct a book sale and signing following this program. This program is free and open to the public but reservations are encouraged. Call 385-5990 to reserve a seat.
