The Japan America Society of Southern Colorado (JASSC) is celebrating "Kodomo-no-Hi" (Japanese Children's Day). This is a Japanese traditional day to honor and celebrate all children. This fun-filled day will include many hands-on activities, including Japanese craft-making activities (such as origami, calligraphy and carp making), Ninja demo, Obon dancing, and Koto and Taiko drumming performances. All supplies will be provided and children will take home everything they make, just in time for Mother's Day. Although the event is free, reservations are required in order that JASSC can prepare enough supplies and seating. In past years, the popular event has attracted an average of 200 children and parents. Reservations should be made by May 1st by e-mail to Kayoko Jennings, kayokoj@comcast.net. Members of Shumei Taiko in Crestone will bring some of their largest taiko and will invite children and adults to practice playing the drums at the end of their performance. The final event will be a gala children's fashion show, a popular photo-op event. All children are reminded to wear their kimonos, yukatas, martial arts uniforms, and oriental costumes so that they can be a participant in the Fashion Show. The event is co-sponsored by the German, Russian, and East-Asian Language Department of Colorado College. All craft activities are taught and supervised by JASSC volunteers and Colorado College students.
