Tunnels of Oppression is a weeklong museum-like exhibit featuring a variety of installations that showcase different sorts of oppression that exist in contemporary America. Themes addressed include racism, homophobia, sexism, classism, religious persecution, and other forms of discrimination, both covert and overt. The event will take place from 12 pm to 10 pm between Monday, January 21 and Thursday, January 24 in Gaylord Hall in Worner Campus Center on the Colorado College Campus. In addition to being open to Colorado College students, staff, and faculty, members of the Colorado Springs community are also strongly encouraged to attend. However, because of the strong themes addressed, it is advised that young children not be brought. According to Colorado College senior and Tunnels of Oppression founder Izzy May, the goal of Tunnels of Oppression is to create an awareness that oppression still occurs, and that we can and should take an active role in combating it. In May’s perspective, two of the biggest problems preventing an end to oppression are apathy and ignorance. Currently in ts second year of producton, Tunnels of Oppression was initiated on the Colorado College campus in response to multiple incidents of ignorance, intolerance, and outright hate that have occurred on campus in recent years. According to May, although Colorado College Students are know to be socially active, there is a tendency for them to not notice intolerance happening right in from of them. May hopes that more people become involved in fighting oppression and intolerance on the Colorado College campus and in the Colorado Springs community after they attend Tunnels of Oppression. She would also like to see more Colorado Springs community members come, because oppression and intolerance are not issues that affect just one demographic.
