GOLD! It burned like a fever in the hearts of men and women everywhere it''s been discovered. It drew thousands by boat, on foot, wagon and horseback to the gold fields of the West where they hoped to make their fortunes.
The Western Museum of Mining & Industry is celebrating the 26th Anniversary of the opening of the Museum's main exhibit building with a special admission of $2.60 on Monday, July 14.
Founded by a group of individuals interested in preserving the rich legacy of mining in the American West, the museum is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate the public through its collection, preservation, exhibition, and interpretation of artifacts related to mining, metallurgy, and their support industries. The museum has grown to encompass over 27 acres of land, 17,000 square feet of exhibit space, and over 15,000 square feet of artifact storage. The museum's collection consists of 3,000 artifacts ranging from small, personal items to multi-ton steam engines. These objects are brought to life in interactive, hands-on, and operating exhibits. In celebration of this event, the museum will operate its outside equipment at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., teach visitors how to pan for gold, and offer special tours of its grounds to include the stamp mill, blacksmith shop and hoist house.
