Artists' fascination with the West mirrored the nation's determination to settle from coast to coast. As both a place and ideal for early explorers, trappers, settlers, and miners, artists were quick to discover and visually record new and exciting subjects in these vast lands. The Western Museum of Mining and Industry celebrates the Museum's founding family with an exhibition of never-shown artwork from Katherine and Fred Farrar's private collection. The exhibit will feature the works of renowned Western artists Harvey Otis Young, Charles Partridge Adams, and Joseph Henry Sharp.

Harvey Otis Young, unlike the other two artists, came out West to mine for gold in California and later for silver in Colorado. As he made and lost his fortune in mining, he still had his passion and gift for art. These important works illustrate "the lure of the West."
