    The First Christian Church Concert Series is presenting "The Energizer" Herbert Beattie, who just keeps going and going and going! He'll be singing art songs and folk song arrangements by American composers Samuel Barber, Ned Rorem, Elie Siegmeister, Aaron Copland and William Bolcom, accompanied by Charlene Noland, piano, and a string quartet. A free will offering will be taken.


    Herbert Beattie retired to Colorado Springs in 1980. He served as professor of music at Syracuse University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Buffalo, and Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. He has also led a full-time career as a leading basso with the New York City Opera and numerous other opera companies in the United States, Canada and Europe. As a concert singer, he has appeared with many major symphony orchestras in the United States, singing with Bernstein, Ormandy, Steinberg, Krips and others. He has appeared with the Colorado Opera Festival as a singer and stage director. In Colorado Springs, he has sung recitals devoted to the music of Schubert, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, Schumann, Ives, modern Russian songs, French composers, and American works. Mr. Beattie has a BA degree from Colorado College, a MM degree from Westminster Choir College and an honorary Ph.D. from Colorado College.

    Charlene Noland has recently returned to Colorado Springs, her hometown, from Sacramento where she was director of music at Christ Community Church. She is currently working as an accompanist at Pikes Peak Community College and Colorado College. She has served as substitute organist for various churches and choral groups in town, sings with the chamber choir Abendmusik, works with KCME's Classics for Kids program in the schools, and teaches voice. Her alma mater is the University of Northern Colorado.
