The opening night festivities feature a catered gala reception with complimentary wine/beer and a warm welcome by Michael Merrifield, House District 18 Representative.

The program continues with the presentation of the festival's first pairing of short and feature-length films.

"How Do I Say This? I’m Gay!"
Directed by Michael Bodie and Silas Howard (USA, 2007, 5 min.)
A college student decides upon a song and dance as her way of coming out to her mother.

    Steam
Directed by Kyle Schickner (USA, 2007, 120 min)
With star-studded ensemble performances of men and women, Steam follows three women whose lives are very different, but who all find love in unexpected places.  Ally Sheedy is a single mother struggling to find her voice; the legendary Ruby Dee plays a widow who is rejuvenated by a late-life romance; and Kate Siegel is a college lesbian breaking free from her conservative family's strict hold.  All three experience hardship and heartache, but find confidence and strength from their periodic commiseration in a steam room. Steam speaks to the universality of the human experience and the resilient spirit that allows us to emerge triumphant.

The Pikes Peak Lavender Film Festival is the only completely LGBT film festival in Colorado, and has been held in Colorado Springs since 1999. The festival programmers select from the best short films and features screened at the annual San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival. The Lavender Film Festival is held over a three-day period, opens on a Friday evening with a reception before the screening of that night’s short and feature. The remaining film programs are presented on Saturday and Sunday, being followed by after-parties at the Underground Bars on North Nevada Avenue.
