    The World Unseen
Directed by Shamin Sharif (UK, 2007, 103 min.)
1950’s apartheid South Africa is an unlikely place to be free. Yet, Amina scandalizes her Indian community by wearing men’s clothes and having female lovers while running a successful café. When Amina meets Miriam, who is in a traditional marriage, they have an instant attraction. Miriam longs to be free. Bringing her award-winning novel to the screen, director Sarif gives us fully realized characters where the beauty of the land belies the turmoil of a system built on fear, hatred and separation. This passionate and enlightening historical piece is ever satisfying with extraordinary performances from beautiful actresses. Opens (theatrically) all over the country this weekend.

The Pikes Peak Lavender Film Festival is the only completely LGBT film festival in Colorado, and has been held in Colorado Springs since 1999. The festival programmers select from the best short films and features screened at the annual San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival. The Lavender Film Festival is held over a three-day period, opens on a Friday evening with a reception before the screening of that night’s short and feature. The remaining film programs are presented on Saturday and Sunday, being followed by after-parties at the Underground Bars on North Nevada Avenue.
