Add Review/CommentWhat type of event would compel ordinary people to take extraordinary risks? In 1859, the Colorado gold rush did just this and the Pikes Peak Region's story has been linked to it ever since. In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the rush, the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum and the Hulbert Center for Southwest Studies at The Colorado College present award winning historian and author Dr. Elliott West for a public lecture on Thursday, December 4, 2008. His talk, "The View from Pikes Peak: Colorado's Gold Rush and the American West" will be held at 7 p.m. on The Colorado College campus in Gates Common Room on the third floor of Palmer Hall. The city-owned museum and Colorado College are partnering to bring this program to the community to highlight the Museum's fall exhibit Going for the Gold: Pikes Peak or Bust! (November 15, 2008–August 2009).
Dr. West is a Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Arkansas and has been selected twice as its teacher of the year. He teaches and writes on the social and environmental history of the American West and is the author of five books, including The Contested Plains: Indians, Goldseekers and the Rush to Colorado (1998), winner of the Francis Parkman Prize, and Growing Up With the Country: Childhood on the Far Western Frontier (1989) among others.
The lecture is free, but reservations are recommended because seating is limited. To reserve a seat call the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum at 719-385-5990.
