Etown takes to the road to bring the thrill of a live radio show taping back to Armstrong Hall at Colorado College. This event will feature a broad spectrum of outstanding new music from two excellent artists: Flobots, the progressive hip-hop collective that is Denver's biggest musical breakout story of 2008 along with Nada Surf's front man Matthew Caws. Matthew will present Nada Surf's poppy, thinking man's indie-rock songs in a stripped-down setting. Throw in an inspirational e-chievement award interview and the one-of-a-kind collaborative finale and you have a can't miss evening of righteous entertainment.

    Flobots

"Social change and civic organization are towering goals... Such goals require time, integrity and carry- through. And less than three years after first coming together, the Flobots are here to show their fans and peers what they've done — and how others can do the same thing, both musically and political." – Denver Post

"the band is rap music's most singular breakthrough act in years" – Boston Herald

Flobots formed in 2005. In the midst of the previous year's election frenzy, childhood friends Jonny 5 and Brer Rabbit teamed up with violist Mackenzie Roberts, integrating live hip hop with a passion for voter engagement. Guerrero, then the front man for local funk band Bop Skizzum, convinced the trio to add live instrumentation, and the current incarnation of Flobots was born. Mobilizing connections in the musical and non-profit communities, the group began to garner a reputation for elevating their live shows as socially aware 'happenings.' Sustained by a dedicated fan base and a commitment to artistic autonomy, the group rallies their audiences by practicing the progressive value system they promote and plugging fans into the Flobots' own nonprofit organization. The Denver music scene responded, nurturing the Flobots' penchant for activism and individuality. The local edition of their breakthrough indie release, Fight With Tools, hit the Denver streets in 2007. "Handlebars," rocked local radio stations and quickly made the band's self-produced offering the #1 hip hop break through on the independent charts.

    Matthew Caws from Nada Surf

"The decade's foremost purveyor of power pop." -Los Angeles Times

The three members of Nada Surf have played together now for a dozen years. They've survived overnight major-label success and the inevitable morning-after bleariness, persevering past obstacles that would have sunk a less resilient combo to become one of America's most truly

independent bands. Experience has only made their work richer, bringing gravity to the subject matter and lightness to its presentation. Keeping things honest – and often rapturous -- has become a modus operandi. Lorca, who first met Caws at their mutual grammar school, explains, "When Matthew and I decided we were going to start our own band and that we were going to sing, we set a couple of rules. One of them was that we would not sing in any affected sort of way, that we would sing the way we talked. Another is that we would write about things that were close to us and about our lives."

Vocalist, guitarist Matthew Caws strips down from the trio to solo mode at etown.
