Smokebrush Gallery and Foundation for the Arts in partnership with the Colorado Springs Chapter of Ikebana International presents Ikebana: The Art of Japanese Flower Design. The ancient Japanese art of Ikebana dates back as far as the 6th Century when Buddhism was first introduced to the country. Ikebana compositions represent Heaven, Earth, and Man. The use of empty space and asymmetry are essential features of this art form that creates a harmony between plant, container, and environment. During the Occupation of Japan after WWII many American and British wives became devotees of this art, bringing it home with them after the War. Subsequently Ikebana International was founded in 1956 with the motto "Friendship through Flowers" which expresses their aim of fostering international friendship and fellowship through the study of Ikebana. Art Walk Opening Reception 5-8 p.m, Friday March 7th and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th or March only. Opening reception music by Encompass. Additional Note: This Exhibit runs for 3 days only.
