This year's Japanese New Year's Mochitsuki (or Rice Cake Pounding event) will take place at Colorado College's Worner Student Center in Colorado Springs. The public is invited to participate in this annual free event sponsored by the Japan America Society of Southern Colorado (JASSC).

Hot, sticky rice will be pounded with a huge wooden mallet (called a kee-neh) in a 150-pound wooden mortar; when the rice has been sufficiently pounded into a smooth, white mass, it will be shaped into edible mochi cakes to be consumed by everyone present. Sweet bean paste, sweet powdered soy beans, soy sauce and sugar, seaweed and other condiments will be added to the mochi to add to the flavor. Hot green tea and soft drinks will also be served.

All who attend, including children, are invited to help pound mochi. Consumption of mochi, which is believed to insure longevity and prosperity in the New Year, is a must for all Japanese at the beginning of the year. In order that JASSC can be prepared with enough drinks and mochi for the expected large crowd, those attending are asked make reservations.

E-mail Paul Maruyama at pmaruyama@earthlink.net or call (719) 266-5625 by January 12, 2009, to make reservations.
