Wondering what to do with the family after the gifts are unwrapped and the feast is eaten? Bring them to the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum over the holidays.

This city-owned regional history Museum is loaded with over 24 different exhibits featuring everything from antique toys, nineteenth century American Indian items, and historic landscape paintings to a real Pikes Peak Hill Climb race car, pink 1950s golf shoes, and Simpich character dolls. Children love the historic medical exhibit and riding the 1913 birdcage elevator that connects the Museum's two floors of galleries. The best part of all is that the Museum is FREE!

"This is one of the best times of the year to visit the Museum," says Museum spokesperson Carol Kennis Lopez. "The building is beautifully decorated for the season and there is ample parking around the Museum because of the holiday."

This year there is a special attraction in the newest exhibition Going for the Gold! Pikes Peak or Bust, which tells the story of the 1858-1859 gold rush to the area. Visitors can see real gold dust, nuggets and bullion, and artifacts from the 1862 Steamboat Bertrand. The Bertrand, loaded with supplies for miners on the frontier sank into the Missouri River long before it made it to its destination. The goods were excavated in 1969 and are on loan from the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge in Iowa. Visitors will be surprised at how new the artifacts appear. An interactive video display is also available for those who wish to learn more about the rush and its impact on our local history.
