    When Tradition Becomes Change: New Deal Arts Revivals

    Join Suzanne MacAulay, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, as she presents an illustrated talk on the Arts and the New Deal.

    The New Deal launched an important florescence of art and craft during the 1930s and 1940s. New Deal arts programs have provided important models for subsequent economic recovery projects in impoverished communities ever since. Although these efforts are laudable, they pose some disturbing questions about individual creativity, government regulation and entrepreneurial activities. Why in economically troubled times is art regarded as "salvation" and ignored otherwise? Are these aesthetically fertile and rich opportunities or aesthetic mandates which regularize or neutralize creativity? This illustrated talk examines arts revivals and rebirths in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico during the New Deal era. It addresses some of the same issues relevant to art and society today concerning revitalization, authenticity, centrality and marginalization, and cultural sustainability in view of the ebb-and-flow or fickle nature of arts revivals.

    Dr. MacAulay received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in Folklore and Ethnography. She spent the previous decade developing and teaching a culturally focused art history and folklore curriculum in New Zealand where she was head of a fine arts school. Her book Stitching Rites critiques the role of cultural politics in arts revitalization projects in the San Luis Valley. Among her research interests are Spanish Colonial textile revivals, and Maori weaving practices, performance theory and personal experience narratives, memory, diaspora, class and globalization.
