Please join us at the opening reception for Glass in the Springs, an exhibit featuring the creative talents of the members of the Glass Artists of the Pikes Peak Region.
Founded in 2007, The Glass Artists of the Pikes Peak Region (GAPPR) is a non-profit association of glass craftsmen and artists formed for the purpose of promoting, encouraging and continuing glass artwork. Some of the members have been working in glass for years, while others are new to the medium, but all benefit from the education and social networking. Why do they choose to express their creativity in glass? Perhaps it is because it is the only medium that transmits as well as reflects light. This gives the creations a life of their own, since they appear to change as the light source changes. All glass is made from a recipe of silica, soda ash and limestone. Various metal oxides are added to the basic recipe to achieve colored glass. These include cobalt, dichromate, sulfur, cadmium, nickel, iron, selenium and gold. Red and deep pink glass are made with the addition of gold and selenium, and are therefore the most expensive. The glass craftsman can purchase glass in sheets, rods, fine threads called stringers or noodles, or as ground powders and granules known as frit. They can manipulate it in a cold state, as in stained glass or mosaics, with a kiln or a torch. The possibilities are endless and the craftsman is only limited by his imagination. Glass art forms represented in this exhibit include stained glass panels in the traditional leaded method and also the copper foil technique. There are examples of kiln worked glass, mosaics, glass castings, lampwork beads, glass painting and jewelry design.
