Following the American Revolution, woven coverlets became expressions of American liberty. Embellished with eagles, stars and patriotic mottos, these coverlets, often in red, white, and blue, proclaimed America's independence from English colonial rule. More than bed coverings, these woven works of art were created by both women and men as prized heirlooms. In the twenty-first century they serve as inspirations to contemporary weavers. In Beyond Bedspreads, visitors will see 25 exceptional historic coverlets from the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum collection side by side creations woven expressly for this show by members of the Pikes Peak Weavers Guild. The concept of liberty, whether in economic, political or artistic expression, is the common thread linking three centuries of American weaving. "The Pikes Peak Weavers Guild has really embraced this project," states Museum Program Coordinator Carol Kennis. "Guild members have worked on this project for over two years rasing funds, documenting the Museum's coverlet collection, and creating their own pieces inspired by the historic pieces." Members of the guild will also assist with weaving demonstrations at the Museum from time to time during the run of the exhibit from April 26- August 27, 2008.
