Ira Glass says we are in the midst of the "golden age of nonfiction" (despite also being entrenched in the age of crap journalism). I share Glass's enthusiasm for the superb outpouring of creative truth-telling in our time, from the meteoric rise of book-length memoir to heroic feats of literary journalism. In this one-day seminar we will explore contemporary trends in nonfiction by a) reading and discussing at least one example in each of three sub-genres: memoir, personal essay, and narrative nonfiction (also called literary journalism); and b) completing writing exercises in each form. My hope is that each participant will walk away from the seminar with a new appreciation for creative nonfiction writing and with several solid ideas of writing projects to pursue and creative ways to approach them. Taught by Kathryn Eastburn, previous editor of the Colorado Springs Independent of 10 years. Call the CC Arts Festival office to register at 719-389-6098 or register online at http://www.coloradocollege.edu/SummerPrograms/EnrichYourLife/. Registration fee includes lunch. Class held from 9AM to 5PM. Sponsored by the CC Summer Festival of the Arts.
