The annual and free Children's Day Festival organized by the Japan America Society of Southern Colorado (JASSC) is set for Saturday, May 2 at Colorado College's historic Palmer Hall. Festivities begin at 10 AM and end at 12:30 PM. "Kodomo-no-Hi" (Children's Day) in Japan is a day to honor and celebrate all children. JASSC commemorates the special day with a free and fun-filled festival that include many hands-on traditional Japanese activities. All children are invited to the festival which will include craft making activities, a gala fashion show and taiko drums and ninja demonstrations. The event will be held in Gates Common Room of Colorado College's Palmer Hall, which is the large building directly behind CC's Tutt Library (located on the east side of Cascade Avenue between Uintah and Cache la Poudre). Indoor activities include origami, calligraphy, hands-on koto playing, manga, and other traditional Japanese craft activities. Outdoor events include a fashion show, taiko drum performance and ninja demonstration. The festivities are set up so that children can wander from table to table participating in the activities of their choice. And, best of all, all supplies and instructions are provided and children can take home everything they make. All kids are encouraged to wear kimonos, yukatas, or martial arts uniforms so they can be a part of the gala fashion show finale, an excellent photo op for parents. Organized by JASSC, Children's Day Festival is co-sponsored by the German, Russian, and East Asian Language Department of Colorado College. All craft activities are taught and supervised by JASSC volunteers and Colorado College students. In past years, the popular event has attracted an average of 200 children and parents. Although the event is free, reservations are required in order that JASSC can prepare enough supplies and seating. Parents should note that all indoor activities conclude at 11:30 AM followed by the demonstrations and performances.
