    How and why did money originate? What famous ancient leaders helped define how money looked and was used – then and now? What do the words and artwork on ancient coins tell us about the people who used them – and about ourselves? Travel back in time over 2,000 years and find out. Invented in the 7th century BC in the Kingdom of Lydia, coins replaced cows and sheep as the standard for trade. Soon hundreds of mints in ancient Greece were using dies to produce silver coins similar to our own, with mint marks and two-sided imagery. Explore the foundations of modern money with a trip to ancient Greece. In ancient Rome, money was used to pay salaries, purchase slaves and spread propaganda. Soldiers made more than professors, a day at the coliseum was free, and emperors used coins to announce their rise to power and promote their policies and accomplishments. Enter a Roman temple and learn about life, money and mass media during history’s most famous and infamous empire.
