Join us First Friday for the opening reception of Desde Mi Altura (From My Altitude), featuring the artwork & poetry by incarcerated Cuban Five member, Antonio Guerrero. Opening night features poetry slam with the UCCS's Free Expression Poetry Club and live music on the dock. Plus, live readings of Antonio's poems by Jimmy Santiago Baca. The exhibition continues through October 30.

Antonio Guerrero has spent more than 10 years in a Colorado prison where making artwork & poetry have become his escape from his concrete enclosed isolation. A self-taught artist & poet, Antonio's paintings, illustrations and poems transcend the gallery display to become a testament of the human memory, imagination and spirit, as well as the profound sustentive quality found in the art experience. Mr. Guerrero is one of five Cubans imprisoned between two stories; the story of the Cuban Five and the story of the U.S. government. One side says he is imprisoned for allegedly protecting their homeland from attacks by Miami-based terrorists, the other claims he conspired to commit espionage against the United States. He was convicted in 2001 and is in a federal prison in Florence, Colorado.
