Award-winning journalist and self-acknowledged "grump" Eric Weiner is keynote presenter at Pikes Peak Behavioral Health Group's "Heroes of Mental Health Luncheon." Colorado First Lady Jeannie Ritter is the special guest of honor at this luncheon.
Weiner, international correspondent for National Public Radio, decided to traverse the globe to find happiness. He visited the happiest–and most miserable–places on Earth to figure out what puts people in a perpetual good mood. His New York Times bestseller, The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World, has extraordinary insights into what makes us happy and how cultural factors nurture it. His destinations, according to surveys of the inhabitants, have the happiest people per capita on the planet. Surprisingly, they are not sunny, tropical resorts with sugary white beaches and palm trees. In some cases they were downright cold and dark (think Iceland). Weiner's conclusions on what makes people happy are drawn from his own personal discoveries while abroad, the insights of classical thinkers on happiness, and analysis of the world's most contented cultures, which he spent weeks trying to absorb.
"We are creatures of geography, of place–physical place, yes, but also cultural place," Weiner says in his book. "Culture is the sea in which we swim. It matters a lot more than we think."
