Looking For Roots, Finding Flowers is the first full-length documentary film by independent filmmaker Dan Jacobson.
One thing that has allowed the Jewish people to endure for many centuries is their devotion to memory. Each story and hardship is assumed into the canon, passed on to the children so that they might pass it to their children. This has been an amazing survival technique for over 3000 years, but not without cost. In Looking for Roots, Finding Flowers, the filmmaker finds himself burdened by his responsibility as a Jew to remember his family lost in the Holocaust. This commandment seems to him so inescapable and all-consuming that he escapes and assimilates. He is forced, however, to again explore these feelings when his grandfather, a survivor of Auschwitz, decides that he is ready to return to his birthplace in rural Romania after a 63 year long exile. In their search for the long-lost family home, they are passed from villager to villager, slowly connecting the dots that lead to discovery. The testimonies that they collect from these non-Jews teach that memory and loss are not distinctly Jewish responsibilities but are rather the fabric that ties all communities together.
