The Pikes Peak Jazz and Swing Society presents its 14th annual “Alice Award” to Al Eberhardt at February's Second Sunday Jazz Affair. The award was initiated to honor Alice Cardozo for her musical ability and her personal and professional aura of “class.” After her untimely death, it was decided to carry on the award in her memory. Recipients of the prestigious crystal award are selected by the 70 PPJASS member musicians. This year’s recipient, Al Eberhardt, is highly deserving of the award. For the last decade, he has been an artist-in-residence at Colorado State University-Pueblo, but before that Eberhardt spent 20 years playing trumpet in the military. He first played with the multi-branch NORAD Band, then the famed Air Force Academy Band. As his career progressed, the genial musician gained a reputation for his talent and professionalism. He spent 17 years as the band leader at the Broadmoor Hotel Tavern and bought The Changing Times Band in the late 1970s; he still leads the group.
His Changing Times Quintet (Al on trumpet, Wayne Wilkinson, guitar, Brad Eastin, sax, Eric Eberhardt on drums and Alan Polivka on the Roland FR-5 accordion) will also be the featured group for the afternoon. As a special Valentine's Day treat, our host, Costas Rombocos, is preparing the “Foods of a Mythic Land” authentic Greek cuisine buffet reminiscent of his now-closed Greek restaurant, Zorbadillo’s.
As always, there will be dancing, door prizes, a cash bar, plus the buffet available for purchase.
