The 5th Congressional District and Cottonwood Center for the Arts hosts the 28th annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students grades 9 through 12. The theme for this year’s show is “Art of a Nation.”

The Congressional Art Competition was created by Senator James Jeffors (VT) in 1982 while he was a member of the House of Representatives. Every year, Congressional offices across the nation initiate the Congressional Art Competition in their own home districts. The works were selected from participating high schools in the 5th Congressional District.

Professional artists from Cottonwood will select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each of the following categories: watercolor, oil & acrylics, drawings, computer-generated, photography, prints, and mixed media. A “Best of Show” award will be awarded to the student whose work of art displays not only excellent principles of art and elements of design, but also originality, and that extra something that touches the audience. The “Best of Show” art work will be sent to Washington, D.C. to be exhibited in the U.S. Capitol along with other award winning artwork from around the nation. The “Best of Show” winner will also receive a scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design, a $4,000 scholarship from Adduce Foundation, and three round-trip tickets from Southwest.com to attend the official ribbon cutting celebration held in Washington, D.C.

A reception will be held Friday, February 26, 2010 at Cottonwood Center for the Arts, to recognize our young artists, their families, friends and art teachers. All entrants will receive a certificate of participation signed by Congressman Lamborn. The  show runs from February 26 to March 17, 2010.
