Master Draftsman Michael Mentler will show you how to master the drawing process from the very first stages and develop it as a whole. Learn how to analyze the pose and understand the essence of what the model is doing. All great drawings are built on a solid foundation and knowing where and how to start is key. This course is about thinking and drawing consequently there will be no 30 second poses, blind contours or squiggle drawings. Michael will lecture and do demonstrations in the morning and after lunch we will draw from the model with individual instruction and end of session critiques. The goal here is to understand the rhythms and gestures and capture the attitude of the pose in the first couple of minutes and then try not to lose it during the rest of the process.

Instructor Bio: Michael Mentler began drawing at an early age and had his first solo show of drawings at the age of 14 followed by a second show at 16. The artist went on to take evening figure-drawing classes at the American Academy of Art, in Chicago, before enrolling in The Layton School of Art, in Milwaukee. After a semester, he transferred to Washington University, in Saint Louis, where he was exposed to a solid foundational program and excellent instructors, notably Werner Drewes and Barry Schachtman. After graduation, Mentler began his career in advertising working decades as a creative director before deciding to pursue drawing and painting full time. Today he teaches Faces & Features, Figure & Form, and the P.L.A.N. method in Dallas at The Society of Figurative Arts which he founded, as well through his own classes and workshops taught around the country.
