An opening reception for a new exhibit featuring paintings and sculptures by George Sanchez, local professional artist and recently retired Pikes Peak Community College Executive Director of Marketing & Communications. Musical entertainment will be provided by the EQUINOX jazz ensemble and refreshments will be provided.

Sanchez was influenced greatly by his father, Jose Sanchez, a respected art teacher and widely-noted New Mexico artist. His father took George on painting excursions into the foothills and mountains surrounding the Espanola Valley, from Taos to Santa Fe. They both loved the land of sagebrush and pinon, the adobe houses, and the earth from which they were made. That love of the Southwest is reflected in his much of his art.

Sanchez says, "My art is a timeless expression of who I am and the images that captivate my mind. I strive to create images that revive the relationship between ourselves and our humanity that stir some deep emotion, or ignite some flame of passion for something we all hold common, and care about, whether it be love, fear, happiness, sorrow, admiration or anything else that makes us human. The world as we see it, only different. More serious. More satirical."

Sanchez studied art formally at the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo, where he studied under the tutelage of Orlin Helgoe, Lew Tilly and others, until he became grounded and centered in his approach to art. He later taught art there and at the Sangre de Cristo Art Center in Pueblo. He plans to teach at PPCC in the spring of 2011.
