Join us First Friday, for an opening reception of work by San Francisco artists Judith Selby Lang & Richard Lang titled Not So Far From Home. We’ve been sold the myth of “disposable” plastic. We toss it away but it stays with us forever. This duo of San Francisco artists and beachcombers demonstrate the ubiquity of plastic pollution by configuring plastic collections culled from the beaches of California, presented as beautiful photographic prints, yet reflecting the reality of our trash. Over eleven years ago as beachcombers at Kehoe Beach in the Point Reyes National Seashore, Judith Selby Lang & Richard Lang became aware of the dire situation of plastic pollution. Since then, they have collected from this one beach almost two tons of plastic, washing ashore from as far away as Korea, the Philippines and as close to home as the San Francisco Bay. To demonstrate the ubiquity of plastic waste in our oceans, this collaborative team configures their collection of plastic into arrangements that represent the aesthetic strategy of counting Reminiscent of drawers in a natural history museum; each print panel is a collection of similar found objects: combs, tiparillo tips, toys, lemon juice bottles, hair clips, soldiers, disposable lighters, balls, cheese spreaders. The artists want to show what is close to home is also happening on a global scale in the oceans. They pick objects that are familiar then by displaying their numbers.
