Join us for the opening of systematizing: Part 2!  This exhibition features work in both UCCS galleries (GOCA 121 and GOCA 1420), and is the first time a single theme has occupied both spaces.  systematizing: Part 2 is located in GOCA 121.

There are systems all around us. From bureaucracies to weather patterns and routines to computer programming, systems are not only a part of our world, but they help define our place in it. We use and depend on systems to maintain and describe order. We are also constantly creating new ones.

systematizing explores various forms of systems, including social systems (particularly as they relate to technology and social media), systems and patterns in nature, and systems organically and methodically constructed in specific spaces.

systematizing: part 2 features work by Christopher Baker and Liz Miller. Baker’s work is fundamentally concerned with the complex relationship between society and its technologies. Trained first as a scientist and only recently as an artist, his practice represents an uneasy balance of eager technological optimism, analytical processes, deep-rooted skepticism and intuitive engagement. Much of this is inspired by the interconnectivities – visible and invisible – present in the modern urban landscape

Miller’s site specific-installation, “Decorative Eco-Disaster,” combines shapes from invasive species, weather-related charts, graphs, and diagrams, elements of ornament, and weapon design. The work’s seductive color and intensive repetition camouflage the more sinister story that unfolds in the gallery. The line between beauty and devastation becomes imperceptible as seemingly stable forms morph into a display of aggressive and beautiful devastation.
