David Weddle, CC professor of religion, will present his new book on miracles. The work examines the enduring interest in miracle stories in five world religions, from tales of flying yogis and rebbes with healing power to levitating bodhisattvas, miracle-working saints, and disappearing Sufi masters. As “events of transcendent power that arouse wonder and carry religious significance for those who witness them,” miracles are signs of authority and emblems of hope that the future may be radically different from the past and that the horizon of human possibilities is not entirely defined by the operation of natural forces. Can a religion without miraculous signs be worth the bother?
