"Gathering STEAM: A Community Arts & Science Fair” will take over the 20,000 square foot Imagination Space at The Citadel! The fair is a collaborative fundraising event featuring four of the featured non-profit organizations in the Colorado Springs Independent’s GIVE! Campaign. The selected organizations coming together to Gather STEAM will be Greccio Housing, Cool Science, Interfaith Hospitality Network and Imagination Celebration.
The fair will be free of charge and open to the public, with over a dozen different booths active in the Imagination Space creatively presenting a variety of arts and science experiences. The presenters of these experiences will be kids and teens representing Greccio Housing and Interfaith Hospitality Network. Cool Science and Imagination Celebration are training these youths to present and supervise all of the science and arts experiences, an important element to the event. These young people will gain leadership experience, empowering and providing them opportunities they would not acquire otherwise.
Kids and families will be able to interact at booths with experiences ranging from ice cream making with liquid nitrogen, the science of sound, and water pressure powered fish to drawing and creating doodle inventions, culinary decoration and creative tinkering with robots made from recycled electronic parts. All of the interactions have a common element of being inspired by the 21st Century learning objectives of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math).
In addition, The Citadel will be welcoming Santa Claus on this date, and there could be a surprise visit from the jolly ol’ elf during the fair.
Interfaith Hospitality Network will also be leading fair visitors in decorating Houses For Change. Using markers, crayons, collage materials and imaginations, kids will be able to decorate plain boxes to look like houses. Participants will then be invited to take their decorated boxes home and in the following weeks fill them with loose change. Interfaith Hospitality will be asking for them back before the end of the year to make a communal donation for the area’s homeless.
Another highlight of the event will be the appearance of Vocal Fusion, a well-known show choir/community chorus performing at 1:00 p.m. in the Celebration Place, Imagination Celebration’s additional presentation space directly across the hall from the Imagination Space. Vocal Fusion’s musical versatility will be featured in their 30 minute performance.
In addition to these activities, the Gathering STEAM event will be an opportunity to educate the public about each of the sponsoring non-profits and their inclusion in the Indy GIVE! Campaign. There is a computer kiosk set-up in the Imagination Space that is linked directly to the secure IndyGive website. Donations to the participating organizations will be able to be made directly from this computer kiosk. The GIVE! Campaign is only accepting donations to the selected non-profits through on line donations and checks.
Goals of the GIVE! Campaign are to educate our community about the important work performed by local non-profits; to encourage people who do not regularly give to donate time and money, with a particular emphasis on getting those in their 20s and 30s to become philanthropists; and to provide a Pikes Peak philanthropic platform which will make giving back to our community easy, enjoyable and effective.
