The Modbo is excited to have free jazz ensemble The Bottesini Project gracing its stage once more!
Bottesini is notoriously difficult to classify. The guiding principle of the ensemble has always been dedicated to free improvisation. Over the history of the band, a number of remarkable musicians have joined in the collective to make the magic of improvised music happen.
Since 2009, Bottesini has undergone an identity shift. The group is still creating improvised music that sounds like intricately woven and arranged compositions. Yet, the group has shifted from a collective of musicians rotating through the group to a core group of talented musicians who have found remarkable chemistry through a shared improvisatory voice.
The chemistry of Paul Riola, saxophones, Glen Whitehead, trumpet, Serafin Sanchez, tenor saxophone, Glen Taylor, petal steel, Doug Anderson, bass, and Jay Ellis, drums has led to a change in musical direction for the band as well. The music has taken a turn into decidedly jazz-based territory— and audiences often express disbelief that the music is actually improvised. The new Bottesini is beautifully melodic and surprisingly accessible to a mainstream audience.
