Set the Scene for a Cool Yule in Manitou
Black Friday is anything but dark as fireworks, Christmas carols and holiday sales brighten the night.
The day after Thanksgiving, commonly known as “Black Friday”, is an event associated with big box stores, overwhelmingly large crowds and through-the-roof stress levels. But not in Manitou Springs, where the Hometown Holiday event sets the tone for the upcoming season with free hot chocolate and cider, live music, fireworks and Santa arriving on a fire engine.
Xanthe Alexis of the Hopeful Heroines will entertain the crowd with her uniquely sweet version of popular Christmas carols. “At 6 p.m., Santa will arrive at the celebration on a Manitou Springs fire engine, and light the trees up and down Manitou Avenue,” said Brad Walters, downtown supervisor for the Manitou Springs Public Works Department. “As the tree is lit, the fireworks will light up the night from behind the tree.” Many merchants will offer hot drinks and treats in their stores throughout the day. With several new stores in Manitou, it’s a good time to come and shop, stay for the fireworks and entertainment and wrap up the evening at one of Manitou’s many award-winning dining establishments.
And the fireworks aren’t the only reason to head over to Manitou on Black Friday. Beginning with Black Friday and running through the end of February 2011, shoppers who have $75 worth of receipts from Manitou businesses located within the 80829 zip code can present them to the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce and receive a voucher for a free companion lift ticket from Monarch Mountain Ski Resort. There is no limit to the number of vouchers shoppers can receive with their receipts. Even if you’re not a skier, you can still bring your receipts to the Chamber that are dated from November 26-29 and enter to win a $500 Manitou shopping spree. In order to qualify for the shopping spree, receipts must be presented to the Chamber by November 30, 2010.
Manitou Springs is a also a proud participant of Small Business Saturday, which is a national effort on Saturday, November 27, 2010 to encourage consumers to support small businesses in their local community. Additionally, Manitou is also participating in Colorado’s statewide 4th Annual Buy Local Week Campaign (November 26 - December 3) since it presents an additional opportunity to raise awareness about the need to connect with locally-owned businesses in our community.
