Eric Swab will present a history on the Skelton Mountain Ranch, a Dude ranch 3 1/2 miles west of Woodland Park. This Ranch was in operation from approximately 1905 to 1916.
Mr. Swab retired from his computer programming business in 2004. Since then, he has spent at least 2 days a week hiking, mostly on Pikes Peak. The Peak is littered with the remains of human history, some of it well known, with much of it little known. He is intrigued with finding out more about the little known endeavors. His first serious research was on the Oil Creek Tunnel, a gold mine on the east side of Pikes Peak. Afterwards, he became interested in the Fremont Forest Experiment Station, the second such project in the United States. This station made significant contributions to the reforestation of the Rocky Mountains. When Eric finished the Fremont project, the archaeologist at the Pike San Isabel National Forest asked him to look into the Skelton Mountain Ranch.
In addition to his interest in history, Mr. Swab is a member of the Colorado Mountain Club and The Friends of the Peak. He is involved in the completion of the “Ring the Peak Trail” and in the opening of the South Slope Watershed to recreational use. Eric volunteers with the Pike San Isabel National Forest and with the Bureau of Land Management.
Mr. Swab has lived in Colorado Springs with his wife since 1972. They have 2 children and 3 grandchildren.
