Colorado Springs Poet Laureate Emerita Lois Beebe Hayna will celebrate her 98th birthday with a book signing of Casting Two Shadows: A Collection of Poems, her recently published, and sixth book of poetry. Hayna is well-known in Colorado for her poetry, and in 2009 received an honorary degree from Regis University for her work. In 2010, Regis dedicated the Lois Beebe Hayna Creative Writing Center, which was established by The Martin Family Trust. She also is recipient of the Golden Quill from Friends of Pikes Peak Library, and of a Fellowship in Poetry from the state of Colorado. Hayna also received the 2010 Writer of the Year Award from Pikes Peak Arts Council. Ted Kooser, Pulitzer Prize winner and former US Poet Laureate Consultant to the Library of Congress, has honored Hayna by choosing one of her poems to feature on-line and in his February press releases.
Born in Idaho, raised in Wisconsin and a graduate of University of Wisconsin, Hayna did not begin writing poetry for publication until her 60’s, and since has been a frequent reader at a variety of locations in the state, and interviewed by Denver w9 News, Colorado Public Radio and others.
“I just lived a pretty ordinary life, working to support my kids and doing the normal stuff until they all got off to college and then in my early sixties, I decided to see if I could write,” says Hayna with familiar modesty and good humor.
The event is hosted by Poetry West, a non-profit organization poets from Colorado Springs and surrounding areas. Poetry West presents workshops open to the public throughout the year. Hayna was a founding member of the group and edited the group’s The Eleventh Muse publication for several years.
Casting Two Shadows: A Collection of Poems will be available for sale at the event, and Hayna will read selections from the book. There also will be a question and answer session. For a list of her other titles, see www.coloradopoetscenter.org.
