Brian Barker will present a workshop and writing exercise called “Ekphrastic Poetry”.
This workshop will touch on the history of ekphrasis (poetry based on works of art) and examine several model poems that illustrate the genre’s seemingly limitless capacity for reinvention. We will consider what constitutes an ekphrastic poem, what the freedoms and limitations of the genre are, and how ekphrastic writing can be utilized in the writing process for inspiration and to overcome writer’s block. The instructor will bring a selection of art postcards and art books that participants will use for the writing exercise.
Brian Barker is the author of The Animal Gospels (Tupelo Press, 2006) and The Black Ocean (Southern Illinois University Press, forthcoming June 2011), winner of the Crab Orchard Open Competition. His poems, reviews, and interviews have appeared or are forthcoming in such journals as Poetry, Kenyon Review Online, Ploughshares, Agni, Quarterly West, TriQuarterly, The Writer's Chronicle, The Washington Post, Blackbird, Pleiades, and storySouth. He teaches creative writing at the University of Colorado-Denver where he co-edits Copper Nickel.
Poetry West is a local poetry organization that provides a forum where people who enjoy writing, reading and listening to poetry can come together to share this common interest.
