Don’t miss the return of Mark Trecka, part of the trio Pillars and Tongues, whose musical pursuits seem to defy genre categorization. The ongoing result of these pursuits has been called, variously, "holy" and "sexy" and it may well be the tension between these two concepts which lights the fire under (over?) Pillars and Tongues. Think on those things which are so beautiful they become obscene. Speaking literally, the group makes use of the human voice, violin, double bass, drums, bells and keyboards. The music is perhaps distinctly American in both its affair with American forms and its refusal to adhere to them at all.
The trio has performed over 250 concerts in the past three years throughout the U.S., Canada, France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. They have toured with Bonnie "Prince" Billy and have at other times shared the stage with Dirty Three + Nick Cave, Bill Callahan, Daniel Higgs, Sir Richard Bishop, etc. There are full-length releases on: Empty Cellar Records, Contraphonic, Lotus Sound and Featherspines.

Local favorites The Changing Colors revolve around twin brothers Conor and Ian Bourgal, who perform haunting, heartfelt songs of love and longing. On their debut album, “Ghost of Red Mountain,” the Bourgals take the notion of haunting a step further. The record — released by Pueblo’s Blank Tape Records — takes its inspiration from Emma Crawford, one of the most famous residents of tiny Manitou Springs, Colorado. Local lore has it that — sometime around the turn of the last century — Ms. Crawford’s coffin was washed out of its resting place on Red Mountain and floated right down Main Street.
The story of a dead pioneer woman floating through the streets of a mountain town fits perfectly with the spare, roomy Americana of the Changing Colors. With simple instrumentation, whiskey-roughened vocals and a sense that things could go very wrong at any moment, the brothers Bourgal tell stories and create atmospheres that will have you seeing ghosts.
