    Bent's Fort and the Culture of the Southern Plains

    Travel back in time to 19th-century Colorado with a field trip to the Arkansas Valley that features special tours of Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site, the historic settlement of Boggsville, and the collections of the Koshare Indian Museum.     Travel back in time to 19th-century Colorado with a field trip to the Arkansas Valley that features special tours of Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site, the historic settlement of Boggsville, and the collections of the Koshare Indian Museum. Participants will learn firsthand about the diverse mix of peoples who traveled and lived along the old Santa Fe Trail: the Southern Cheyennes and Arapahos, fur traders, ciboleros, soldiers, and early ranchers. This is a full-day immersion in the rich history and material culture of the Southern Plains. Mark Lee Gardner will be the tour guide. Mark is an independent historian, author, musician, and consultant. His latest book is “To Hell on a Fast Horse: The Untold Story of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett” (Harper, 2011).
