Tin Roof Productions presents Arthur Miller's powerful Tony Award-winning play 'The Crucible.'
With a cast from up and down the Front Range, 'The Crucible' invites you into a conversation about "the ways in which we, as human beings, try to cover up the truth in all kinds of cosmetic ways – until we finally admit it and then are either sunk by it, or made stronger," says director, Karen Hamer. Recommened for teens and adults.
To those used to seeing this play costumed in the black-and-white dresses and "funny pants" of Puritan New England, the colors and dynamic of a 1950s setting may come as a surprise. Karen Hamer set the play in the 1950s as an invitation to the audience to approach it freshly, backed by the buoyancy and veneer of that era, and to go beyond thinking of it as being only about the Witch Trials of the 1690s or the McCarthyism of the 1950s.
"I am interested in the relationships and struggles of the characters which are representative not only of their time, but of ours as well," says Karen. "In our society today, we wrestle with the meaning of identity, freedom and honor - the same issues people faced in 1690s New England and in 1950s Washington D.C. And whether in marriages, or the workplace, or in church, or on Facebook, there’s still the tension between the private self and the public life, and what we will allow our vulnerability and our integrity to be.”
