The Pikes Peak Community Foundation, along with its initiative organizations Venetucci Farm, Pinello Ranch, Pikes Peak Urban Gardens and Gordon Jackson Foundation at Aspen Valley Ranch are sponsoring an event in conjunction with Cross Pollination 2011--a five-month, citywide art collaboration and public education campaign spearheaded by the Gallery of Contemporary Art (GOCA) at UCCS.
This event features a free film screening, panel discussion, information booths, refreshments, family activities and an art exhibition by FutureSelf youth artists.
About the film:
Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives.
Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and a hundred other fruits and vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables.
Filming across the US, in Europe, Australia and Asia, this documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between mankind and mother earth. As scientists puzzle over the cause, organic beekeepers indicate alternative reasons for this tragic loss. Conflicting options abound and after years of research, a definitive answer has not been found to this harrowing mystery.
Movie-goers who arrive early can enjoy a “Bee Happy Hour” with lemonade, Bristol Brewing Beehive beer or Meade. They will also be able to visit organization info booths, view art made in beeswax by FutureSelf youth artists, and participate in family-friendly bee-related activities in the foyer and hallways of the theater. Following the film, an expert panel will discuss the ways in which this crisis is playing out in our local community and talk about the simple ways people can take action at home and in their communities.
We have many partners and collaborators to make this a truly extraordinary event, including Pikes Peak Community Foundation and all of its initiative organizations, GOCA, Marmalade at Smokebrush, I.D.E.A Space at Colorado College, the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, PPCC Art Department, FutureSelf, Stagazers Theatre and Bristol Brewing.
