Thin Air Jazz: Big Band Concert
September 25, 2011
Add Review/Comment
Thin Air Jazz is a 12-piece big band that has its origins in Fil Lorenz's Collective West Jazz Orchestra in San Francisco. Loosely based on the Maynard Ferguson band and the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band of the 50s and 60s, Thin Air is very strong in paying tribute to the great bands that came before it.
The band's library is made up of original music as well as arrangements made popular by the Count Basie Orchestra, The Woody Herman "Herds", Buddy Rich's Band, and Maynard's bebop band.
As with the great bands that have come before it, Thin Air is made up of musicians who are not only excellent ensemble players but also great jazz soloists. This strength of improvisation keeps every performance fresh and the excitement high. The rhythm section of guitar, bass, and drums provides the perfect foundation for soloists as well as full-band ensemble sections.
Thin Air Jazz has performed at Showcase at Studio Bee; The Steam Plant in Salida, CO with special guest Bobby Shew; and Bear Creek Park for the PPJASS. From Feb. 2010 to June 2011 the band played monthly at the Ancient Mariner in Manitou Springs. On Sept. 11, 2011, Thin Air was part of the Woodland Music Series in Woodland Park.
