An exhibition of 17 illuminated folios from the St. John’s Bible, the first complete handwritten and illuminated Bible to have been created since the 16th century, will be on display at Benet Hill Monastery Sept. 25-Oct. 11, then at Colorado College’s Coburn Gallery Oct. 19-Nov. 8. This work, commissioned by St. John’s Abbey in Minnesota, and directed by one of the world’s foremost calligraphers, Donald Jackson, memorializes the union of image and text in framing religious life. Although many decorated Bibles were produced by medieval monastic communities for 1,000 years, this work expresses a contemporary aesthetic, calling moderns to engage with an ancient text interpreted by modern hands. A variety of lectures and workshops connected to the Bible exhibition will be noted in this online calendar, welcoming members of all faith communities in the Pikes Peak region, as well as those interested in art history and book arts.
